"Oh, if we were not missionary children," this sigh of the young Marie Gundert in the Basel mission house may also have been uttered by her son Hermann in his childhood and youth.

Marie's unusual life as a missionary in India, her work as a writer, her marriage to Johannes Hesse, and the relationship between mother and son will be explored in a dialogue between her texts and Hesse‘s. An attempt will be made to answer the question which Hermann Hesse poses in his early text Conversation with a Silent Man: "What do you comprehend when I say: my mother?"
