In this novel, which was published in 1912, Hermann Hesse tells the story of his three-month journey to the "Indian lands", undertaken in 1911 together with the painter Hans Sturzenegger. In a sensitive and touching way, Hesse describes here the destiny of a young missionary from London who leaves for India. Through the confrontation with the foreign culture and religion, he will question his prejudices and finally distance himself from the ecclesiastical authorities of his country of origin.
