Temporary exhibition
31 March 2024 – 2 February 2025 · Museo Hermann Hesse Montagnola
Hermann Hesse's work and our knowledge of the writer have become increasingly complete over the last half-century, not least thanks to the work of his publisher Volker Michels. With the 20-volume edition of "Sämtliche Werke" and a 10-volume edition of the poet's most important letters, he has more than doubled the volume of his writings and enriched them with important, previously unknown facets. In numerous thematic volumes devoted to topical existential issues, as well as volumes documenting the history of the creation and impact of Hesse's books, which have meanwhile sold at least 150 million copies worldwide, he has enabled us to rediscover his work.
Discover in this exhibition the motivations of this passionate publisher, who already corresponded with the poet as a student, and who worked for four decades as an editor at Suhrkamp and Insel. You'll also discover how the work of a publisher can broaden and update an author's image.
