Since last year, the Museo has housed an Atelier designed to welcome local artists who explore and reinterpret aspects of Hermann Hesse's life and work in a broader sense.
The first artist invited to Montagnola, Valerio Abate (*1994), drew inspiration from the character Friedrich Baroh in Ernst Jünger’s Il problema di Aladino. This figure embodies the same thoughts and emotions found in Jünger’s Al muro del tempo, a work Hesse praised in a laudatory review in 1960.
Inspired by Friedrich Baroh, Abate’s sculptural work delves into the theme of identity, using engravings that interlace historical, literary, and artistic elements, creating intricate references to the history of art and literature. He reinterprets the spiral Roman column, transforming it into a symbol of decadence and the past. His work – a warped column – is displayed in a deliberately unsanctified context, further amplifying its effect.
